Dreaming of Mallorca

Many years ago, we fell in love with Mallorca. After countless holidays, we have been living on this enchanting island for several years now, living our dream.

Mallorca is not just Ballermann or Magaluf, as many still believe, which is a bit annoying... because it's so much more.

By the way, you can also get inspiration on our Instagram account palma_stories21. We regularly post about recommended restaurants & cafes, excursions, trendy shops, and tips for dogs. Of course, we test everything ourselves beforehand!

We were particularly impressed by Palma, the vibrant island capital. In the multicultural city with its Mediterranean flair, we feel at home. Much is within walking distance, whether it’s the old town with its La Seu cathedral and many trendy shops or the lively Santa Catalina district with the well-known Mercat de Santa Catalina. There are numerous cafés, bars and restaurants here, which make this district a culinary meeting place. The atmosphere is buzzing. The best thing is to have a coffee in one of the cafes near the Mercat, while observing the colourful hustle and bustle and soaking up the atmosphere.

We are always impressed by the culinary diversity that Mallorca and especially Palma have to offer. There are the passionate young chefs who interpret tapas or traditional dishes in a new and modern way. Those looking for Michelin-starred cuisine will also find it here. Our absolute favourites are the Vandal restaurant in Santa Catalina, the Sushi Bar Arume in the Mecat de Santa Catalina and the Urbà of Santi Taura above the roofs of the old town with its wonderful sea views.

Thanks to mild temperatures all year round and numerous days of sunshine, you can enjoy peace and nature on one of the beautiful hikes in the Tramuntana Mountains or along the coast. The views of the sea, romantic bays or charming villages are breathtaking. Active holidaymakers will find they are catered for with many sporting activities, such as water sports, golf, hiking, biking (road bike & mountain bike), padel, tennis and football, to name just a few. There is definitely something for everyone.

But beach lovers will also get their money's worth. Whether you prefer a magical bay with turquoise waters or white sandy beaches that stretch for miles, you won't be disappointed! Since Palma is right by the sea, it also has some beautiful city beaches, such as the small bay Cala de Portixiol. Another fantastic idea is to spend a day at one of the island's many beach clubs.

We prefer the small bays, but the sandy beaches with their chiringuitos also have their charm. Is there anything more beautiful than enjoying a glass of rosado and some chipirones as a snack while looking out to sea?

Also worth seeing are the numerous firas that take place especially in autumn, including wine or olive festivals. There are excellent Mallorcan wines. We prefer to drink white wine or rosado. A particular favourite is the white wine Nounat from the Binigrau winery. A visit to the many unique weekly markets in Mallorca is always worth it.

By the way, Mallorca is not just a natural beauty. The Mallorcans love their festivals and traditions. This is an essential part of Mallorca's culture. Our favourite festival is the Noche de San Juan at the end of June in Palma. Almost the entire city celebrates on the Platja de Ca’n Pere Antoni. There are barbecues and dancing late into the night. Across in Park del Mar, you can watch the fire walkers, called Corre Foc, accompanied by the sound of Mallorcan drums. It’s an almost mystical experience. Let yourself be carried away and stroll through the streets of Palma, enjoy the fireworks, live music and much more at one of Mallorca's wonderful festivals!

Actually, a trip to Mallorca is worthwhile at any time of the year. A special tip from us is the Christmas season in Palma. The Christmas lights are wonderful. A sea of lights makes the city centre shine. There are Christmas markets and many restaurants offer festive menus. Treat yourself to a weekend to experience this Christmassy atmosphere at pleasant temperatures.

The sunny island is also very attractive to families, not just to sunbathers, food lovers, those seeking peace and quiet or active holidaymakers. Anyone thinking about living permanently in Mallorca with their family will find a wide range of Spanish and international private schools. Our children have been going to school here for years and enjoy an excellent education.

Perhaps we could inspire you and awaken your desire to discover Mallorca on your own.
